I don’t know why after all these years I decided to read this book- I wish I hadn’t. The author, who became acquainted peripherally with Ted Bundy while they both worked at a Suicide Crisis Hotline, launched her book writing career off Bundy, dropping his name, her “friendship” with him, every letter he sent (maybe a total of 6), in a sad attempt to link herself with this person. It worked. This connection launched her career and steady steam of lackluster books that followed.For decades, until her own death, the author brought Ted Bundy up again and again, in books, interviews, lectures, law enforcement training -as if meeting a serial killer by happenstance qualified her as an expert in psychology, criminology and scholar, all in one.We hear the author state ad naseum about the limos (more than once), talk shows, news programs, interviews and a plethora of other press junkets, including a screenplay for film, offered to the author for her limited "inside" insight into Bundy. At the time of his execution, she is on an extra frenzied press junket due to more interest in Bundy with the execution date approaching, which she whines she can't keep up with. She brags she no longer has to worry about the bills. Ironically, Bundy complained later that he felt exploited by the author, someone who never knew him, yet played the connection to the hilt. Perhaps I should enjoy the twisted irony more of a woman taking advantage of a serial killer, but the greedy and narcissistic way she does it isn't something I can get excited about.Worse than using this unfortunate acquaintance to launch her writing “career,” she also comes off as one of the many women who were manipulated by and enabled Bundy. She admits as much. In addition to sending him money, letters, acting as a go between for him with his many jealous girlfriends, would talk to Bundy on the phone in prison and let him know how many women were contacting her to ask about him (I found this horrific because this was well after his multiple convictions, I am sure it likely triggered him - why would she bait him like that at the expense of other women?) and inserting herself into his case, even trying to negotiate a guilty plea for him (without his knowledge), it seems like Ann Rule had a more than normal interest in her "subject", and it paid her handsomely in royalties.Aside from the writing being jumbled, chaotic, and amateur, she also left out large swaths of history, including closing the loop and ultimate disposition of the Washington and Oregon cases.I found this book and its author to be huge disappointments.
